1. Approach

The main premise of most treatment programs is to change the way we think of the past, in order to change our current thoughts and behaviours (Dr. Freud’s etiology). But what do we do if this type of therapy does not work for us?

If you want to try something different, we are advocating for goal directed activity (Dr. Adler’s individual psychology). Past trauma is important but it is not causing our current thoughts or current behaviours. Imagine what would happen if we just did not talk about the past anymore, and we decided to change our thoughts and behaviours today - and that the new role of health care is to help us get through today, while preparing for tomorrow.

  2. Individual care – no group therapy

A main premise of many programs is group-based therapy. Our program only has individual discussion and individual care. We believe that many clients want their deeply personal circumstances to remain confidential. We have group education – but we do not have group therapy. As well, we do not offer standardized programming – each program is tailored to you as an individual.
  3. Multi-disciplinary care.

Your assessment and treatment team will be individualized to your condition – based on what you feel you need, and what we also feel that you need. Your team may include a psychiatrist, general practitioner, clinical psychologist, clinical social worker, registered nurse, emergency room nurse, psychiatric nurse, addictions worker, pharmacist, recreation therapist, dietician, life coach, spiritual advisor (if requested) and other medical specialists (if required) like a cardiologist, internist, endocrinologist, neurologist or nephrologist.
  4. Cost.

The cost for many programs is not publicly disclosed. You have to call in to figure out the price. The goal of our mental health in-patient emergency room is to offer professional care immediately – without a wait - for $500 per night. We also have one week in-patient mental health, and one week in-patient addiction detox and treatment programs, for $2,500 per week. The most inexpensive in-patient residential mental health and/or addiction program we could find in Western Canada was $16,625 for one month. There are in-patient facilities in Ontario charging $60,000 per month. As such, we are asking for $8,312.50 for one month of in-patient mental health and/or addiction care (half of second lowest price we could find); which includes 30 overnight stays and 90 meals. Internal and external financing is available.

We also have out-patient mental health and addiction services in the community. The doctors are billed through Medicare (no direct cost to you). The Psychology Association of Saskatchewan recommends $200 per hour. There are psychologists in Saskatchewan charging $275 per hour. As such, our out-patient therapists charge $175 per hour. If you have a corporate/ employee benefits plan, we can likely bill your benefits directly.

We offer hourly out-patient services, overnight in-patient emergency, weekly in-patient mental health and/or detox treatment, and monthly in-patient mental health and/or treatment options.

  5. Activities.

We are located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Our in-patient facility is located on a 20 acre campground for you to relax in a natural, wooded area. Our out-patient facility is located on Taylor Street. Our in-patient facility has access to essentially all activities (depending on season) – canoeing, kayaking, walking, biking, yoga, skating, snowshoeing, bird watching, horse drawn carriage rides, golf, swimming, bowling, painting, sculpting, equine therapy, canine therapy and so on. We perform activities for a few hours every day. We have our own fitness center and relaxation/meditation center which we do for a few hours every day as well.
  6. No wait list.

When people are ready for care, they need help immediately, and they deserve help immediately. You can start today or tomorrow. As mentioned, we offer mental health emergency overnight care but you can also stay for a week or a month if you want.
  7. Home cooking.

We offer home cooking for all of our meals. We also offer BBQ and fire pit options. In-patient services include three family-style meals a day and snacks.
  8. Contact with family.

Different from most programs, you can talk with your family members on our telephone or on our computer. We request that you do not bring your own phone or computer. At your request, we will include family members (or friends) at the right time to help you start and continue with your new goals. Visits can be arranged on any day but we have family day every Sunday including sharing a nice meal together.
  9. Follow-up care.

When you leave, you have the option to be followed up in your community.
  10. Who we are.

We are honored to have been externally recognized 27 times by the Moose Jaw Chamber of Commerce, the Regina Chamber of Commerce, the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce and the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce for Group of the Year, Business of the Year, Community Involvement, Customer Service, Growth & Expansion and also Innovation. External nominators have included Mayors, Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, Chiefs of Police, Police Associations, Medical Health Officers from Health Regions, the Public Health Agency of Canada and multiple not for profit agencies. We are honored by our external nominators and humbled by the external recognition.
  11. Life coach.

Treatment is less likely to be successful if we do not address current life circumstances. At your request, we will help you find a new job, keep your existing job, determine a new career, help you apply to college, offer marital advice and counselling, help with debt re-structuring, talk with the justice department or police, talk with social services, help apply to various provincial or federal assistance programs and so on. If you ask, we will help in any way we can. You will also be given one or two workbooks on completely different ways of approaching mental health and/or addictions.
  12. Who do we help?

We are most equipped to deal with functional mental health and functional addiction issues (ex. people who are working, going to school, or living at home - but are finding it harder and harder to cope – and harder and harder to change). We are not equipped to replace the hospital system, the correctional system or the social services system. In plain language, we offer services to those with minor or moderate severity. Extremely complicated cases with complex needs are better suited for long term hospital care.
  13. We see youths and adults.

We do not have a minimum age to participate but a youth would have to be mature enough to knowingly provide informed consent to treatment (normally around 14 years of age) for in-patient care. There are no age restrictions for out-patient or community-based care.
  14. What we do not do.

We only offer standard medical care (ex. prescription medications like anti-anxiety medications) and therapy (ex. clinical psychologist, clinical social worker, or addictions worker). We do not offer needle exchange, we do not offer methadone maintenance therapy, and we do not offer harm reduction services (like minor amounts of marijuana or alcohol). We are not suggesting that those services can not perhaps benefit some patients, but we do not offer those services. Instead, we offer prescription medications, therapy, life coaching, exercise, dietary change, relaxation, meditation and recreation on an in-patient or out-patient basis.
  15. Our commitment to you.

We are committed to the principles of diversity, equality, and dignity. We are committed to values of fairness, inclusiveness, respect, integrity, honesty, kindness and ethical behaviour. We are committed to the importance of a sense of belonging.
